Church is part of Margit’s big picture
<< | Paintings | >>
Churches, and the activities around them, figure prominently in Margit’s earliest paintings. In most of her work, the non-specific church building is positioned similarly. And when people are included, they are heading towards the building.

When people aren’t present, it can be because it’s winter of the church is farther in the distance.

It’s rare for Margit to hide a church behind trees (see below). In fact later when she painted the Stone Church, she “removed” trees from in front of the church. When someone commented on the missing trees, she would ask, in essence, “You want to see the church, don’t you?

Here we get some foreshadowing of how Margit will throw shadows across roads. See Shadows on Roads.

Margit recreates the road to church but adds two girls (her two daughters?) to the scene. She also throws in a fence, a more detailed house, more interesting branches to the trees….
What else can you spot that’s been tweaked?
Schools are treated similar to churches. She doesn’t feature just the building. It’s like it’s not a school unless people are involved.
