Margit’s family

Margit came from a family with a tradition of artistic expression

When it comes to art, here are a few notable members in Margit’s immediate family:

Her dad — Tarkjel Landsverk

Margit’s dad was a man of many talents. Besides building several houses, he expressed himself by painting, creating all sorts of carvings, and designing stone monuments. He even published a number of poems in small magazines — as well as his own book of poetry.

Her mom — Helga Oian Landsverk

Margit’s mom was adept at the domestic arts (at right, she’s creating a hooked rug). But according to Margit, Helga was not as appreciative as her father Tarkel of the less functional arts, like painting. To Helga, a quilt or a rug was particularly useful. A painting on the wall, less so. It has been surmised that Helga’s disapproval was the reason Margit didn’t start painting until after her death, in 1948.

Her brother — Halvor Landsverk

Margit’s younger brother became well known as a woodcarver, especially of Norwegian-style kubbestols (log chairs).
