From a park in town to country rock outcroppings, these are some sights that would be familiar to the locals of Fillmore and Houston counties.

  • ID: 61-12 “Lanesboro Park”
  • Details: 22 x 28 / Orig price: $7.50 / 1st owner: E Storhoff
  • Current owner: Peterson Museum (see Museum pieces)
  • Comment: We’re not sure why Margit chose to paint this actual location. It doesn’t seem like it would appeal to her artistic eye.

  • ID: 72-17 “Twin rock”
  • Details: 16″ x 20″ / Orig price: $15 / 1st owner: EM
  • Comment: This painting was likely done from a picture, probably by request. Margit created several paintings of “Twin Rocks” (and a sibling formation “Lone Rock”) which—so we’re told—are of rock formations in nearby Holt Township.

Note: This painting was donated to the Fillmore County Historical Society. See Museum pieces.

  • ID: 73-13 “Twin Rocks”
  • Details: 16″ x 20″ / Orig price: $15 / 1st owner: J Halvorson
  • Comment: Painted roughly a year later than 72-17, Margit recreates the scene with a few slight differences. Most likely she was going by the same picture, but nobody would complain if the lighting and the foliage vary slightly.

  • ID: 73-49 “Cushion Peak”
  • Details: 16″ x 20″ / $15 / 1st owner: D Benson
  • Comment: [We need a better picture!] This distinctive peak stands out to anyone driving up the Root River valley west of Houston, MN. (Note it’s often called Cushman Peak, Cushions Peak, and so on.) Margit herself didn’t need a photograph to paint this landmark. For several years she lived on a farm across the highway from it (in her memoir see the Cushion Peak chapter, which also has an old photo of it).

Still, see what an expert says about it…

[The Cushion Peak painting] is based on a color photograph but has the well constructed composition of a carefully planned original creation.
