Stone Church

An historic church that loomed large in Margit’s life

<< | Paintings | >>

The Stone Church, rural Houston MN, is a place Margit knew well. She and Palmer served as custodians and groundskeepers there. And it’s where they are buried (along with several of their children).

Note: At the time Margit painted this church, a line of mature trees extended across the front of the building. Margit “removed” several trees for her painting. When someone commented on the trees’ disappearance, Margit replied to the effect that “you want to see the church, don’t you?” As much as Margit liked trees, she appreciated good views more. Of course that makes us wonder what other tweaks she made when depicting other actual scenes.

  • Comment: Considering how connected Margit was to the unmistakable Stone Church, we know very little about her relationship with South Fork church. Still, it’s intriguing that South Fork’s style (as far as we can tell from the picture) looks very much like so many of Margit’s “generic” churches (see “early churches“). Coincidence?
