Mountains

These are not Margit’s familiar hills and bluffs

Margit is foremost an artist of the Upper Midwest—a beautiful region but one that doesn’t host any mountains. Still, she painted a number of snow-topped mountain peaks.

Margit often portrayed an unspecific mountain or range of mountains, especially when the picture had a religious theme (see Religious-themed paintings). For these, of course, she would write a Bible verse in the foreground, such as “I lift up my eyes” or even “The Lord is My Shepherd“.

But Margit also painted landscapes based on recognizably real mountains. Sometimes she would name her source (she recorded one painting as “Teton Mt lake”), but documenting her inspiration wasn’t her concern. Even if she had seen these mountains firsthand (on a rare trip to California, for example, to visit her son Paul), she undoubtedly followed a photograph when recreating the scene.

  • Comment: Margit created several of this scene. In this one, there seems to be a highway just over the lake.

  • Comment: This painting looks like the previous scene but from a slightly different viewpoint. In fact, a lot of Margit’s mountains look like the same range, even if it feels like she has changed from following a picture to creating her own vista.

Question: Does Margit ever create a mountain scene that doesn’t also show a lake or river?

  • Comment: Thankfully Margit mentions “Teton” in her records, so it doesn’t take much to guess what mountain range is pictured here.
